Verifying NMN purity and its market status
NMN purity, stability and market status
NMN is an expensive, fragile raw material with an unsettled regulatory position. Two questions decide whether the SKU works: the purity you actually receive against the purity on the certificate, and whether the market you are shipping to still permits the ingredient. Both need answering before artwork, not after.
Purity and the nicotinamide problem
Commercial NMN is quoted at 99% or higher by HPLC, and the usual adulterant is plain nicotinamide, which costs a fraction as much and hides behind a weak assay. Insist on a per-lot third-party HPLC certificate with the chromatogram attached.
Heat and moisture degrade it
NMN is hygroscopic and breaks down to nicotinamide and ribose under heat and humidity. Keep it out of wet granulation, hold processing temperatures low, and pack with a moisture barrier and desiccant. Assay drift across shelf life is the failure buyers never see coming.
NMN versus NR
Nicotinamide riboside is the other NAD+ precursor and sits behind chloride-salt patents that restrict who can sell it. NMN is not locked the same way, which is part of why it dominates Asian shelves. The two are not interchangeable on a label.
Methyl donor pairing
Nicotinamide clearance consumes methyl groups, which is the reasoning behind pairing NMN with trimethylglycine or a methylated B12 and folate. It is a formulation convention rather than a proven requirement, so keep it in the formula and out of the claims.
Status varies by market
The US FDA has taken the position that NMN is excluded from the dietary supplement definition on drug-preclusion grounds, and other regulators have moved since. Confirm the ingredient's current standing in every market you intend to sell in before committing to a print run.
Formats
Capsules suit NMN best: no compression heat, no granulation water, and an HPMC shell holds far less moisture than gelatin. Direct-compression tablets work if the blend stays dry throughout. Loose sachets are the riskiest option, because a hygroscopic powder cakes inside a stick pack unless the laminate is a true barrier, and those runs start from around 10,000 sticks.
Halal & sourcing
NMN is produced enzymatically or by fermentation, so the halal file turns on the fermentation medium and the downstream processing aids rather than the molecule itself. Ask for the substrate. An HPMC shell keeps the finished capsule vegan; a gelatin shell does not.
