Dosing magnesium and L-theanine without melatonin
Building a sleep formula without melatonin
Melatonin is controlled in Malaysia and is not available for over-the-counter supplement use, so a locally registered sleep product has to be formulated without it. Confirm the current listing before you design the pack. What remains is magnesium, amino acids and traditional botanicals, and each of those brings a dose-volume problem.
Elemental magnesium, not salt weight
Magnesium glycinate is roughly 14% elemental magnesium, so 500 mg of the salt delivers about 70 mg of magnesium. Oxide is around 60% elemental but absorbs poorly and loosens stools. Declare the elemental figure, because that is what buyers and regulators compare.
L-theanine isomer purity
Calm and sleep products use 100 to 200 mg of L-theanine. Cheap material can be a racemic D/L mixture from chemical synthesis, while the studied form is pure L-theanine, usually fermentation-derived. Ask for enantiomeric purity on the certificate of analysis.
Glycine will not fit
The glycine dose used in sleep trials is around 3 g, which is six capsules or more. Any gram-scale amino acid forces the product into a sachet or a drink. This is the most common reason a sleep concept has to be redesigned after costing.
Tart cherry carries melatonin
Tart cherry and a few other botanicals contain naturally occurring melatonin, and marketing that trace content can pull the product into a controlled classification it was never registered under. Keep melatonin off the label and out of the claim, even when it arrives with the fruit.
Sedation is a drug claim
Induces sleep, treats insomnia and sedative all read as medicinal claims. Registrable sleep positioning stays on supporting relaxation and normal sleep patterns. Write the claim first and design the formula to support it, because the reverse order produces a product you cannot advertise.
Formats
Gram-scale actives decide the format. Magnesium with glycine is a sachet or nothing, and loose-sachet runs start from around 10,000 sticks. Theanine with a botanical extract fits into two capsules, and capsule runs start from as few as 100 boxes. A sleep sachet also needs a night-appropriate flavour, not a sharp citrus one.
Halal & sourcing
Flavour systems are the halal control point in a sleep sachet, because many liquid flavours are carried in ethanol, so specify alcohol-free grades. Colours matter too, since carmine is insect-derived. GABA and L-theanine should be fermentation-derived with the substrate declared.
