Vitamin C form, stability and liposomal claims
Vitamin C forms, acidity and moisture
Vitamin C is cheap, so brands compete on form and delivery rather than on dose. Ascorbic acid, mineral ascorbates and coated grades behave completely differently in a tablet, a gummy or an effervescent tube. Almost every production problem with this ingredient turns out to be a moisture problem.
Acid versus ascorbate
Ascorbic acid sits near pH 2.5, which is fine in a capsule and harsh in a chewable, where it erodes enamel. Sodium ascorbate is buffered but adds roughly 115 mg of sodium per gram. Calcium and magnesium ascorbates shift the mineral declaration instead.
Coated grades for tablets
Uncoated granular ascorbic acid (USP, 99% and up) is hygroscopic and reactive against other actives. Coated grades, typically 97% ascorbic acid with an ethylcellulose or hydrogenated-oil coat, flow better, compress directly, and slow reactions with minerals and B vitamins sharing the tablet.
Browning in gummies
Ascorbic acid reacts with reducing sugars and amino acids, so vitamin C gummies yellow then brown well before the assay drops. Low water activity, a coated ascorbate and packing away from light recover most of that stability.
Absorption ceiling
Absorption is saturable. Uptake runs around 70% to 90% at doses of 30 to 180 mg, then falls below half above one gram. Two to three grams causes osmotic diarrhoea, which is the practical ceiling for a daily product.
Effervescent needs dry air
An effervescent tablet is an acid and a bicarbonate held apart by the absence of water. Compression has to happen in a low-humidity room, the tube needs a desiccant cap, and the bicarbonate puts sodium on the nutrition panel.
Liposomal claim risk
Liposomal vitamin C is a substantiation trap. A true liposome requires phospholipid encapsulation and a measured particle size distribution. Many powders sold as liposomal are lecithin blends, which will not support the absorption claim under scrutiny.
Formats
Effervescent tubes and sachets suit vitamin C because both deliver a gram-scale dose in one serving without a horse-sized tablet. Sachet runs start from around 10,000 sticks. Coated tablets start from 100 boxes and stay the cheapest way to hold a 500 mg to 1000 mg dose.
Halal & sourcing
Ascorbic acid is fermented from glucose, so it is not animal-derived, but the halal certificate needs to cover the fermentation medium, any peptone used, and processing ethanol downstream. Chewable and gummy versions bring the gelatin question back in.
