Reduced glutathione stability and oral dosing limits
Glutathione forms, stability and oral dosing
Glutathione is a tripeptide of glutamate, cysteine and glycine, and it is fragile in three ways at once. It oxidises in air, it is broken down in the gut, and it develops a sulphurous odour as it degrades. Most of the work on a glutathione product is protecting the molecule rather than choosing a dose.
Reduced versus oxidised
Only reduced L-glutathione, GSH, is the active form. It oxidises to GSSG on contact with air and moisture. Specify reduced glutathione content on the raw material specification and retest it, because total and reduced glutathione are not the same number.
Yeast fermentation is the source
Oral glutathione is normally produced by fermentation, usually Torula yeast, not extracted from animal tissue. That makes the base material vegan by default and simplifies documentation, although the fermentation medium and any carrier still need checking.
Oral bioavailability is contested
Gamma-glutamyltransferase in the small intestine cleaves intact glutathione, which is why oral dosing is argued over. Commercial doses run 250 to 500 mg a day. S-acetyl-L-glutathione and liposomal forms aim to survive the gut and cost noticeably more.
Precursors are not a free choice
Glycine and cysteine raise endogenous glutathione by supplying the rate-limiting amino acid. Acetylcysteine is registered as a medicine in Malaysia rather than a supplement ingredient, so confirm its status in every destination market before designing a formula around it.
Sulphurous odour is inevitable
Degrading glutathione releases sulphur notes. Blistered tablets and individually sealed sachets contain that far better than a jar reopened daily. Sharp citrus and berry systems mask it acceptably; dairy, vanilla and chocolate bases amplify it.
Injectable use is out of scope
Intravenous glutathione for skin lightening is not an approved use and is not a supplement product. A clinic moving to a retail brand needs an oral formula, its own NPRA registration, and cannot carry the clinic's language onto the box.
Formats
Sachets suit glutathione because each dose stays sealed until the moment of use. Capsules at 250 mg to 500 mg can start from as few as 100 boxes, making them the cheapest market test. Avoid clear bottles and clear sachet film, since light and oxygen both cost you assay over shelf life.
Halal & sourcing
Fermented glutathione is animal-free, but the growth medium, carriers and anti-caking agents still need certificates. The capsule shell is the usual pinch point: bovine and porcine gelatin are standard, and HPMC is the straightforward substitution.
