Collagen source, peptide size and dose
Collagen is a gram-dose ingredient, and that single fact decides most of the product. Commercial daily doses sit between 2.5 g and 10 g. That load rules out a standalone collagen capsule and pushes the format towards sachets, shots or jelly. Source and peptide size then set taste, solubility and cost.
Marine versus bovine
Marine collagen comes from fish skin and scale and is almost entirely type I. Bovine hide supplies type I and III. Marine peptides run lower in molecular weight and absorb faster, but cost more and bring a fish note that must be masked.
Hydrolysed means peptide size
Native collagen sits near 300 kDa and will not dissolve in a cold drink. Hydrolysed peptides are enzymatically cut to roughly 2 to 5 kDa. The fragments studied for skin are dipeptides and tripeptides such as Pro-Hyp and Gly-Pro-Hyp.
Type II is a different product
Undenatured type II collagen from chicken sternum is dosed at about 40 mg a day and acts by a different mechanism to hydrolysed peptides. It is a joint ingredient. Putting it in a beauty formula and calling it collagen misleads the buyer.
Vitamin C is a cofactor
Proline and lysine hydroxylation needs ascorbate, which is why most collagen beauty formulas carry 60 to 500 mg of vitamin C. Vitamin C is also acidic and hygroscopic, so it affects sachet sealing and stated shelf life.
Test cold-water dissolution
At 10 g in 200 ml a weak hydrolysate turns cloudy and slimy. A good one dissolves clear in cold water inside 30 seconds. Run that test on the raw material yourself before approval, rather than accepting a certificate of analysis alone.
Hygroscopicity drives packaging
Collagen powder pulls moisture fast and cakes hard. Sachet film needs an aluminium barrier layer rather than a clear laminate, bulk jars need a desiccant, and both need low-humidity conditions at filling.
Formats
Powder sticks are the default because they carry 5 g to 10 g cleanly. Ready-to-drink shots and jelly sticks perform better in convenience channels but need a pH and preservative strategy. Capsules only make sense for low-dose type II or a collagen booster alongside other actives, and those can start from as few as 100 boxes.
Halal & sourcing
Bovine collagen must trace back to halal slaughter, and the certificate has to cover the abattoir, not only the peptide processor. Porcine hide collagen is cheap and widespread in this category, so verification matters. Scaled-fish marine collagen sidesteps the question.
