Glucosamine forms, collagen dose and claim limits
Joint formulas: dose, heat and claims
Joint formulas fail on arithmetic before they fail on science. The doses used in the glucosamine and chondroitin trials are large, and adding MSM pushes a serving past three grams. The alternative is a low-dose active such as undenatured type II collagen, which builds a completely different product.
Sulphate vs hydrochloride
Glucosamine sulphate 2KCl is the form used in most of the European trials; glucosamine HCl carries more glucosamine per gram but a thinner evidence base. The 2KCl salt is stabilised with potassium chloride, which is inert weight you still pay for.
Chondroitin origin and assay
Chondroitin sulphate comes from bovine trachea, porcine cartilage or shark cartilage, and grades vary widely in real chondroitin content. Ask for the assay method on the certificate of analysis. Origin also decides whether the finished product can be halal at all.
Undenatured collagen is heat-sensitive
Undenatured type II collagen works at 40 mg a day, but only while it stays undenatured. Wet granulation, drying and compression heat can denature it. It belongs in a capsule or a cool direct-compression blend.
Collagen dose honesty
Hydrolysed collagen for joints is dosed near 10 g a day in most trials. Bioactive collagen peptides sit near 5 g a day. Undenatured type II collagen works near 40 mg. A 500 mg collagen capsule is none of them.
Botanical standardisation
Boswellia should be standardised to AKBA, not total boswellic acids. Plain 95% curcumin absorbs poorly, so joint blends use a phospholipid, cyclodextrin or piperine-assisted grade. Print the standardisation, because it is the only figure a buyer can compare.
Where the claim line sits
In Malaysia a joint product registered as a health supplement may speak about joint comfort and mobility. Treating osteoarthritis, repairing cartilage or relieving arthritis pain are medicinal claims and push the product into a different NPRA category.
Formats
Format is decided by the serving weight, not by preference. Full-dose glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM needs a stick sachet, and loose-sachet runs start from around 10,000 sticks. Low-dose builds around undenatured type II collagen, hyaluronic acid or boswellia fit a two-capsule serving, and a capsule run can start from as few as 100 boxes.
Halal & sourcing
Porcine chondroitin and gelatin shells are the two things that quietly disqualify a joint formula. Bovine chondroitin needs origin documentation back to the abattoir; marine and fermentation-derived grades sidestep it. Crustacean glucosamine is chiefly an allergen declaration, while Aspergillus-fermented glucosamine avoids both questions.
