Avoiding sibutramine and other slimming adulterants
Slimming actives and adulteration control
Slimming is the most heavily policed supplement category in Malaysia, and adulteration is the reason. Products in this space are repeatedly found spiked with sibutramine, a withdrawn appetite suppressant, along with laxatives and prescription antidepressants. Registered products are subject to post-market sampling, and when a result comes back positive the brand owner carries the consequence.
Sibutramine exposure
Sibutramine was withdrawn worldwide over cardiovascular risk and remains the classic adulterant in slimming coffees and capsules. A single positive result cancels the registration and takes the brand with it. Incoming raw-material testing and traceability are the only real defence.
Laxative shortcuts
Senna, cascara and phenolphthalein deliver fast visible results and dependency. A slimming tea that works by purging is a short-lived brand and a liability. If bowel movement is the mechanism, dose it honestly as an occasional-use product.
Green tea EGCG ceiling
Green tea extract concentrated for EGCG has been linked to liver injury at high daily intakes, and several regulators now cap it. Standardise the extract, fix a maximum daily EGCG figure, and print the intake limit on the label.
Glucomannan handling
Konjac glucomannan swells many times its volume in water and works through satiety. A tablet that begins hydrating in the throat is a choking hazard, so deliver it as capsules or loose powder with a mandatory take-with-water instruction.
