Dissolution, preservation and dosing in oral liquids
Oral liquids: syrups, tonics and drops
An oral liquid is a dosing system, not a drink. Everything in it must stay dissolved or evenly suspended for the life of the bottle, at a viscosity a spoon or dropper can measure. Briefs fail on three things: an active that will not dissolve, a preservative system that will not hold, or a dose volume nobody will swallow.
Solution or suspension
A solution doses identically every time. A suspension needs a xanthan or cellulose gum network to hold particles, a shake-well instruction on the label, and redispersion testing after the bottle has stood still for weeks.
Preservation and pH
Sodium benzoate needs a pH below about 4.5 to work; potassium sorbate holds to roughly pH 6. Either way pH is a formulation decision, not an afterthought. Benzoate with ascorbic acid can form trace benzene, so vitamin C liquids need a different system.
Dose volume and taste
Bitterness scales with volume, so a 5 ml dose masks far more easily than a 15 ml one. Sorbitol and glycerine sweeten and stabilise, but sorbitol has a laxative threshold that caps how much a daily dose can carry.
Extract solvent and haze
Liquid herbal extracts arrive in a solvent. Ethanol-free and glycerine-based versions cost more and taste different. Tannin-rich botanicals can haze or throw a sediment after a few weeks, which customers read as spoilage.
Actives in water
Water accelerates degradation. Vitamin C, folate and B12 need an overage set against stability data, not a guess. Most live probiotic strains will not survive a water-based liquid at ambient temperature; spore-formers are the exception, otherwise a dual-chamber closure keeps it dry until use.

Amber glass and amber PET protect riboflavin, vitamin A and many botanicals from light. The closure sets dosing accuracy: a graduated cup, a 5 ml spoon, or a dropper calibrated to the fill viscosity.
Formats
Dropper bottles suit potent, low-volume actives. Multi-dose amber bottles with a graduated cup suit tonics and children's syrups. Single-dose vials or liquid sticks remove measuring error entirely. Our published low entry points are capsules and tablets from as few as 100 boxes and loose sachets from around 10,000 sticks; liquid fills are quoted per bottle size and closure.
Halal & sourcing
Ethanol is the hidden halal risk in oral liquids. It carries most commercial flavours and many herbal extracts, and glycerine can be tallow-derived. Certificates are needed from the flavour house and the extract supplier for the carrier, not only the active.
