Functional beverages: dose versus drinkability
A functional beverage is judged as a drink first and a supplement second. People drink 250 ml to 330 ml in one sitting and expect it to taste good, which caps how much active a serving can carry before bitterness or astringency takes over. The efficacious dose and the palatable dose rarely agree, and closing that gap is the formulation work.
Dose per serving ceiling
Gram-level water-soluble actives, such as 5 g of collagen peptides or 3 g of citrulline, go into a 250 ml serving without much trouble. Botanical extracts at 300 mg to 600 mg are harder, because bitterness arrives before the dose does.
Sweetener system
Malaysia charges excise duty on sugar-sweetened beverages above 5 g of total sugar per 100 ml, so most functional drinks are built under that line. Reb M steviol glycoside avoids the liquorice note of Reb A. Erythritol restores mouthfeel but adds a cooling effect.
Masking, not covering
Bitterness is managed with acid, salt and a little sweetener together, not sweetener alone. B-vitamin premixes carry a sulphurous thiamine note that no flavour fully hides, so the flavour profile is usually built around it rather than over it.
Haze, sediment and colour
Calcium and magnesium salts can haze or settle as pH drifts. Natural colours fade under retail lighting, and vitamin C with amino acids browns over months. A clear bottle shows every one of these; amber and opaque packs do not.
Food or health supplement
A product sold as a beverage in Malaysia sits under the Food Regulations 1985, while a health supplement in dosage form is registered with the NPRA and carries a MAL number. That choice decides your permitted claims and label content.
Formats
A functional drink reaches market three ways: ready-mixed liquid, a powder or effervescent the customer mixes, or a concentrate. Powder is the cheapest route because you are not shipping water, and sachet runs start from around 10,000 sticks. Ready-mixed liquid is quoted separately, since fill and pack drive its cost more than the formula does.
Halal & sourcing
Colour is the usual halal problem in drinks. Carmine is insect-derived, and some cloud emulsions and vitamin beadlets use gelatin as a carrier. JAKIM-recognised systems need certificates covering those carriers and processing aids, not only the headline actives.
