Silymarin standardisation and liver claim limits
Silymarin, silybin and what standardisation hides
Liver support is a milk thistle category with a few supporting acts. Almost every brief arrives asking for 80 per cent silymarin, which sounds precise and is not. What that number means depends entirely on the assay behind it, and the assay is rarely stated on the specification sheet.
UV silymarin vs HPLC
Silymarin measured by UV spectrophotometry reads far higher than the same extract measured by HPLC. An extract sold as 80 per cent by UV can test near 30 per cent by HPLC. Always ask which method produced the figure.
Silybin is the active fraction
Silymarin is a mixture of silybin A and B, isosilybin, silychristin and silydianin. Silybin carries most of the studied activity, so silybin content matters more than the headline silymarin percentage on the front of the spec.
Bioavailability is the real limit
Silybin is poorly water-soluble and poorly absorbed as a raw extract. Phospholipid complexes, sold as phytosomes, lift absorption several-fold, which is why a 150 mg complexed dose can outperform a 400 mg plain extract.
Artichoke and choleretics
Artichoke leaf extract is standardised to chlorogenic acid or cynarin, usually 2.5 to 5 per cent. It is used for bile flow, which is a different job from milk thistle's, and that is why the two are paired.
The claim ceiling
Fatty liver, hepatitis and raised liver enzymes are disease terms. A health supplement label cannot go near them. Liver copy that survives review speaks about supporting normal liver function and keeps clinical vocabulary off the pack and out of the ads.
Bitterness and colour
Milk thistle extract is beige, bitter and dusty. It masks poorly in a drink and settles out of suspension, which is why liver support has stayed in capsules while adjacent categories moved to sachets.
Formats
Capsules and tablets can start from as few as 100 boxes, so a liver SKU is cheap to trial. Standardised extract powders go straight into a hard capsule. Oil or phospholipid-complexed silybin has to sit in a softgel shell, a different production route, so raise it early and we will tell you whether it fits.
Halal & sourcing
Capsule shells are the halal question here. Gelatin shells are usually bovine and need certification traced to the slaughterhouse; HPMC shells are plant-derived and skip that chain. Glycerin in a softgel can be plant or tallow. Document the shell, not only the fill.
