Why CFU counts are declared at expiry
CFU at expiry, not at blending
A probiotic is a live product with a decay curve, unlike anything else that goes into a capsule. Two numbers decide whether it works commercially: the count printed on the box, and the count still alive when a customer opens it eighteen months later.

Reputable labels state colony-forming units at end of shelf life, not at blending. That means building in an overage, commonly 50 to 100 per cent above label claim, and proving it with real-time stability rather than an accelerated study.
Strain, not just species
Efficacy data attaches to strains, not species. Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 299v is not interchangeable with any other L. plantarum. Print genus, species and strain designation, and hold the supplier's strain identity documentation for registration.
The 2020 genus renaming
Lactobacillus was reclassified into 25 genera in 2020. Labels still reading Lactobacillus casei or Lactobacillus plantarum are using retired names. Registration files and artwork both need current nomenclature, with the former name in brackets where a market still expects it.
Water activity is everything
Freeze-dried cultures die in moisture. Water activity has to stay below about 0.25 through blending, filling and packing. That rules out most clear films and pushes the pack towards alu-alu blister or foil sachet, often with a desiccant.
Heat and compression
Tableting pressure and the heat it generates cut viable counts sharply. Lactobacilli and bifidobacteria belong in capsules or sticks. Spore-forming Bacillus coagulans survives compression and even baking, which is why it turns up in chewables, gummies and drinks.
Acidic sachet blends
Fruit powders, citric acid and vitamin C lower the pH of a stick pack and shorten viable life. If the brief wants a sharp-tasting probiotic drink stick, either move to a spore-former or accept a shorter declared shelf life.
Formats
Capsules protect viability best and can start from as few as 100 boxes. Stick packs read as a daily habit and suit synbiotic blends, with loose-sachet runs starting from around 10,000 sticks. Gummies and chewables only make sense with a spore-forming strain behind them.
Halal & sourcing
Probiotic strains are grown on a medium, and that medium is often dairy based or contains animal-derived peptone. A halal certificate on the finished powder is not enough. Ask for coverage of the growth medium and the cryoprotectant used in freeze-drying.
