Iodine load decides the sea moss dose
Most sea moss on the market is not Chondrus crispus. The commercial supply is Eucheuma cottonii and Gracilaria, farmed across Southeast Asia including Sabah, and sold under the sea moss name. Species matters, because it drives iodine content, gel strength and the heavy metal profile.
Iodine is the ceiling
Sea moss iodine varies by orders of magnitude between species, harvest sites and seasons. Adult tolerable upper intake is commonly set near 600 micrograms a day in Europe and 1,100 in the United States. Dose to the batch assay, not to a nominal figure.
The sea moss trio
The popular stack pairs sea moss with bladderwrack and burdock root. Bladderwrack, Fucus vesiculosus, is far higher in iodine than sea moss itself. Adding it without recalculating the total is the most common formulation error in this category.
Heavy metals in seaweed
Seaweed concentrates what the water carries. Arsenic, cadmium and lead testing per lot is not optional, and inorganic arsenic should be speciated rather than reported as total. Wildcrafted material is more variable than farmed.
Raw gel does not travel
Fresh sea moss gel sits near water activity 0.99 and needs cold chain plus a preservation system. It is a local, short-shelf-life product. Anything exported is dried and milled, or spray-dried, and rehydrated by the user.
Carrageenan by another name
Sea moss is a carrageenophyte. Push extraction hard and the output is carrageenan, an ingredient a section of the market actively avoids. Whole-plant dried powder keeps the ingredient list honest and sidesteps the argument.
Thyroid claims
Iodine supports normal thyroid function is a nutrient function claim tied to a minimum dose. Sea moss cures thyroid problems is a medicinal claim and will not pass NPRA review as a health supplement.
Formats
Dried sea moss powder is bulky and gritty, so capsules need several per serving and tablets compress poorly. Gummies and stick-pack drink mixes carry it better and mask the marine note. Capsules and tablets start from as few as 100 boxes; loose-sachet runs start from around 10,000 sticks.
Halal & sourcing
Seaweed is halal in itself, so the scrutiny falls on imported raw material paperwork. Sea moss from Indonesian or Philippine farms needs a halal certificate from a JAKIM-recognised foreign body before it can enter a certified batch here.
