Shells, lubricants and other hidden vegan risks
Vegan claims fail on the excipients
Vegan is decided by the smallest ingredients on the panel. The actives are usually the easy part; the claim breaks on a capsule shell, a tablet lubricant, a vitamin beadlet coating or a colour. Auditing a vegan formula means going line by line through every processing aid, not just the actives.
Capsule shell material
Standard hard capsules are bovine or porcine gelatin. Vegan runs use HPMC, made from cellulose, or pullulan for a better oxygen barrier. HPMC holds roughly 4-6 percent moisture against gelatin's 13-16, so it stays flexible in dry conditions where gelatin shells turn brittle.
Magnesium stearate source
Magnesium stearate exists in vegetable and animal-derived grades and the name on the label is identical. Palm or coconut-derived material must be specified on the purchase order and evidenced on the certificate of analysis.
Hidden animal derivatives
The recurring offenders are gelatin-coated vitamin A, D and E beadlets, lanolin cholecalciferol, shellac glaze, carmine red, lactose as a filler, and bone-char-refined cane sugar. Each has a plant equivalent, usually at a higher price.
Softgels are the hard case
Conventional softgel shells are gelatin. Vegan softgels use modified starch or carrageenan systems, run on different equipment, tolerate a narrower fill range and cost more. Where a softgel is not essential, an HPMC hard capsule with an oil fill is simpler.
Cross-contact on shared lines
Vegan is a composition claim, not an allergen one, but buyers and certifiers read it as both. Line clearance records and a documented changeover from any gelatin or dairy product are what a vegan certification body asks to see.
Vegan versus plant-based labelling
Neither term carries a legal definition in Malaysian food or supplement law, so both rest on the manufacturer's documentation. Third-party marks such as V-Label or the Vegan Trademark are what most export buyers actually check.
Formats
Capsules and tablets are the straightforward vegan formats and start from as few as 100 boxes. Gummies need a pectin base instead of gelatin. Pectin sets faster, handles acidic and high-vitamin-C formulas better, and gives a shorter, cleaner bite. Chewable tablets need a vegetable-source lubricant and a non-shellac coating.
Halal & sourcing
Halal and vegan are different audits. Halal permits dairy, honey, fish gelatin and bovine gelatin from certified slaughter; vegan excludes all four. A JAKIM-recognised halal certificate is not evidence of vegan status, and a vegan mark is not evidence of halal.
