How much active fits in a gummy
A gummy is a sweet with a dose in it, and the sweet wins. A 3 g gummy realistically carries 50 to 150 mg of active before texture, taste or both fall apart. Brands that design the label first and the gummy second usually have to redo the label.
Gelatin versus pectin
Bovine gelatin at 180 to 250 bloom gives the elastic, chewy bite most consumers expect and sets quickly in the mould. Pectin gives a shorter, cleaner bite, is plant-based, and releases flavour faster, but needs tighter control of pH and calcium.
Overage, not optimism
The slurry is deposited at 70 to 85 degrees and then cures for one to three days. Vitamin C, folate, B12 and most probiotics lose potency across that window, so the formula carries a validated overage proven by stability data, not a guess.
Sugar-free trade-offs
Replacing glucose syrup with maltitol or isomalt keeps the texture but brings a laxation threshold. Above roughly 20 g of polyols a day, gastrointestinal effects appear, which is why most sugar-free gummy labels cap the serve at two or three pieces.
Tropical stability
Gummies soften and stick above 25 degrees. For Malaysian and Gulf distribution that means a carnauba or vegetable-oil polish, sanding sugar or a starchless mould release, plus a jar or pouch that is not left in an unairconditioned warehouse.
Water activity
Gummies are held around 0.55 to 0.65 water activity. Below that they go hard and dry within months; above it, mould becomes a risk. Curing time and final moisture are controlled to land inside that window, not left to the drying room.
Formats
Gummies win on compliance: people take them, especially children and anyone who dislikes swallowing. They lose on dose, cost per milligram of active and shelf stability. A common split is a gummy for the consumer-facing hero product and capsules for the high-dose line, where runs can start from 100 boxes.
Halal & sourcing
Gelatin bloom source is the first question and carmine is the second. Bovine gelatin needs halal certification traced back to slaughter, and E120 carmine, still common in red and pink gummies, is extracted from cochineal insects. Pectin and vegetable colours avoid both.
