Polyol base, hardness and masking for chewables
Chewables live or die on mouthfeel
A chewable tablet is a confectionery problem wearing a supplement label. It has to break cleanly between the teeth, dissolve without grit, and taste good enough that a child or an elderly patient takes it daily. Every one of those requirements limits how much active you can load.
Polyol base choice
Mannitol is the standard chewable base because it dissolves with a cooling effect and barely takes up moisture. Sorbitol is cheaper but hygroscopic. Xylitol tastes clean and is tooth-friendly, but it is fatal to dogs, which rules it out of pet chewables.
Grit and particle size
Anything coarser than about 50 microns reads as sand on the tongue. Calcium carbonate, magnesium oxide and iron salts are the usual culprits, so they are milled, micronised or bought as coated grades before they go near a chewable blend.
Hardness spec
Chewables are compressed to roughly 4 to 8 kiloponds, against 8 to 15 for a swallowed tablet. Too soft and it crumbles in the blister; too hard and it cracks a tooth. Friability still has to stay under one per cent.
Bitterness and metallic notes
Thiamine carries a sulphurous note, zinc leaves a metallic astringency, and most botanical extracts are bitter. Masking is a system, not a flavour: a lipid or polymer coat on the active, an acid to shorten the aftertaste, then sweetener and flavour.
The weight ceiling
A pleasant chewable tops out near 1,200 mg total tablet weight. Since 500 mg of elemental calcium already needs 1,250 mg of carbonate, high-dose minerals either split across two chewables a day or move to another format.
Formats
Chewables carry more active per unit than a gummy and need no sugar syrup or gelling system, which makes them the better route for kids' multivitamins, calcium and vitamin C at real doses. Chewables are compressed tablets, and tablets can start from as few as 100 boxes.
Halal & sourcing
The hidden animal input in a chewable is the vitamin premix. Vitamin A, D and E are usually supplied as beadlets in a gelatin matrix, so ask for fish-gelatin, halal-certified bovine or modified-starch beadlets before the formula is locked.
