Acid-base ratios, sodium load and moisture control
Effervescent is a humidity problem
Effervescence is one reaction: a solid acid and a carbonate meet water and release carbon dioxide. The whole manufacturing discipline exists to keep that reaction from starting early. In a Malaysian factory, where ambient humidity sits above 75 per cent for most of the year, that is the entire job.
The acid-base couple
Citric acid with sodium bicarbonate is the default. Tartaric acid fizzes faster and is less hygroscopic; malic acid gives a rounder, less sharp taste. The ratio is set by stoichiometry, because leftover carbonate tastes soapy and leftover acid leaves a sour bite.
Sodium load on the label
Sodium bicarbonate is 27 per cent sodium by weight. A 4 g effervescent tablet can therefore deliver 300 to 400 mg of sodium per serve. Potassium bicarbonate cuts that, at a higher cost and a slightly saline taste.
Soluble lubricants only
Magnesium stearate is insoluble and leaves a white greasy film on the water. Effervescent tablets use soluble lubricants instead, typically sodium benzoate, PEG 6000 or L-leucine, which is why an effervescent blend cannot simply reuse a tablet recipe.
Packaging is part of the formula
Effervescent tablets ship in aluminium tubes with a molecular-sieve desiccant cap, or in sealed foil strips. Standard PVC blister will not hold them. Budget for the tube at design stage, because it is a meaningful share of unit cost.
What survives the acid
Vitamin C, zinc, magnesium citrate, B vitamins, amino acids and caffeine all work well. Probiotics, enzymes and most whole-herb powders do not: they are damaged by the acid load, the heat of the reaction, or both. Target full dissolution under two minutes.
Formats
An effervescent tablet reads as a premium daily ritual and carries doses too large for a capsule. The same acid-carbonate system also works as an effervescent powder in a stick, which avoids tube tooling; loose-sachet runs start from around 10,000 sticks.
Halal & sourcing
Acids, carbonates and mineral salts are mineral or synthetic, so animal-source risk is low. Three items still need checking: tartaric acid, usually recovered from winemaking by-products, needs a synthetic or certified source; gelatin as a granulation binder; and ethanol carriers in natural flavours.
