How compression, coating and lubrication shape tablets
What compression does to a formula
A tablet is a powder blend forced together under one to three tonnes of pressure. That single step decides whether the product disintegrates, holds potency and survives the blister. Most tablet problems reported as quality issues are really blend and lubrication decisions made weeks earlier.
Direct compression or granulation
Direct compression works when the actives sit under about 40 per cent of tablet weight and the fillers carry the compressibility. Sticky, hygroscopic or high-dose botanical extracts need wet granulation or roller compaction first, which adds a step and a drying stage.
Over-lubrication makes bricks
Magnesium stearate above roughly one per cent, or blended too long, coats every particle in a hydrophobic film and the tablet stops disintegrating. This is the single most common cause of a tablet that passes assay and fails dissolution.
The swallowing ceiling
An oval caplet stays swallowable up to roughly 1,100 mg and 21 mm long. Past that, the dose splits across two tablets a day. Work the elemental maths early: magnesium oxide is 60 per cent elemental magnesium, magnesium citrate only 16.
Coating choices
An HPMC film coat at two to four per cent weight gain masks taste, blocks light and makes the tablet easier to swallow. An enteric coat holds until pH 5.5 or higher, which is what acid-labile actives and delayed-release positioning require.
Release profile
A hydrophilic HPMC matrix stretches release across six to eight hours and lets a twice-daily active become once daily. Bilayer tooling separates incompatible ingredients in one tablet, for example an immediate-release vitamin over a sustained-release mineral.
Formats
Tablets carry more mass per unit than a capsule, cost less at volume, and can be scored, coated, embossed and printed. They are the wrong choice for oils, low-melting actives and anything that degrades under compression heat. Capsules and tablets can both start from as few as 100 boxes.
Halal & sourcing
Magnesium stearate is the item to check on a tablet. It is made from stearic acid, which can come from palm or from bovine tallow, and only the plant grade is straightforward. Shellac glaze on coated tablets is insect-derived and is worth confirming too.
